atheist statists?

Atheists are fond of pointing to the history of Christianity-- and perversions of it which led to terrific damage.

Many atheists are libertarians or moderate members of some middling political party.

But isn't it odd that atheists would be statists-- given the history of statism and its contributions to human misery?
