a lot of spare time = hilarious practical joke

From the AP (hat tip: C-J): this is a bit dated now, but a VERY funny practical joke...

A Chicago man could be unwrapping the hundreds of Christmas gifts spread around his apartment for days, even weeks.

Trouble is, they aren't really presents. They're his own belongings meticulously wrapped by friends as a prank while he was out of town....

His friend masterminded the scheme after [he] gave him a spare key. It took 16 people, 35 rolls of wrapping paper and eight hours to finish the job....

This reminds me of something I read years ago, in the Portland Oregonian. It seems there were two businessmen in Portland, Oregon, who played practical jokes on each other. Right after Christmas, the one put a classified ad in the Oregonian, giving the other fellow's address and saying that they were collecting Christmas trees for a Scandinavian bonfire festival. The victim woke up to find a front yard full of Christmas trees, with a more people pulling trees out of station wagons. The Oregonian had to tighten its policy on verification of classified ads as a result.
