Aldi's crushes WalMart
Here's Sarah Fortune's report for FOX-7 WTVW in Evansville...
Anyone who's been to both already knew this, but it's a well-kept secret for everyone else...
Families are pinching pennies because of the economic downturn. Grocery bills add up quickly. Wal-Mart is known for low prices but are they the lowest? A new but much smaller store may be giving Wal-Mart a run for their money.
...it's not a matter of who's better just who's cheaper. Stacking apples to apples the same size bag will cost you $3 at Wal-Mart and $1.29 at Aldis. Both stores sell bread for .79. However, 2-percent milk is $2.59 at Wal-Mart and 1.89 at Aldi....You'll save a nickel buying bleach from Aldis and about a dollar on toilet paper....
Fox 7 didn't use coupons on our shopping trip. We made the grocery list before seeing which store was cheaper. Eggs are one cent less at Wal-Mart. That's the only item on our list that Wal-Mart offered at the lowest price.
We love Aldi's, doing about half of our shopping there and splitting the rest between Meijers and WalMart.
Aldi's is awesome for staples; the quality is somewhere between good and excellent-- and the prices are ridiculous. They don't carry nearly everything. But if they have it, you're likely to be quite satisfied.
Other things to know about Aldi's if you decide to check them out: they don't take coupons; you have to pay with a debit card or cash; you have to bag/box your own groceries (I love that!).
Oh yeah, one more thing: make sure you have a quarter in your pocket when you go!
