three movies: RV and NT I & II
Our family has seen three movies in the last month on DVD: the two National Treasure movies and RV.
The National Treasure films were entertaining-- the first a little more than the second-- and a watered-down, family-friendlier version of the Raiders of the Lost Ark franchise.
RV was a little gem (hat tip: Bruce Hardesty). It wasn't high-class film-making or anything. But it was amusing, entertaining, and carried a little punch. It wasn't just family-friendly, but it had a strongly pro-family and anti-consumerist, anti-mainstream message.
Robin Williams is the standard 9-5 guy-- or more accurately, the 8-8 guy who is captive to his job and whose family is captive to its affluent lifestyle. He enjoys his kids when they're young, but as they've grown older, the stereotypical parent/child gap blossoms. I don't want to give the plot away, but the "other" family steals the show-- as the heros and the ones you want to emulate.
Check it out!
