Funny thing-- that's a biblical norm.
Christ is #1; spouse is #2; immediate family is #3.
From there, work, distant family, citizenship, etc. compete for 4th place and beyond.

But in the secular world, I suppose, ranking children behind a spouse can bring criticism!
