destroying clunkers (the sequel)

It can be euthanasia through chemicals or murder through sharp instruments.

Again, this is quite reminiscent of Hazlitt's lesson and the amazing belief that outright destruction-- here, even to the point of not using these cars for parts-- is good for an economy (or the environment)!

To the government, old gas hogs are clunkers. To the giant scrap yard shredder on Grade Lane, they are food....

Up to 235 vehicles a day travel up a conveyor belt into the shredder's 8-foot wide metal jaws at Industrial Services of America. After three or four seconds of ear-splitting noise, the shredder spits out crumpled steel chunks, fist-sized foam pieces, twisted rags, tangled wire, aluminum shards and broken bolts....

That is precisely the mandate of the federal “Cash for Clunkers” program, which stipulates that trade-in vehicles must be crushed or shredded to reduce their impact on the environment...
