"This American Life" on health care-- "must hear" radio

NPR's "This American Life" has an outstanding two-hour show on health care, health insurance, and health reform. (Hat tip: Paul Pittman.)

The program is thorough, balanced, provocative, etc. If you're interested in this issue and can make the time, I heartily recommend the program!

Here's a link to part 1 and part 2.

Wow-great show. I am so glad I spent 2 hours listening to it. A couple of reactions: 1)listening to part 1 I kept thinking of all the info I have read on maternity care and my personal preference that "less in more" when it comes to medical intervention in maternity care and especially labor and delivery. Also, the threat of lawsuits drives many of the medical interventions used in maternity care. 2) I wonder how the hospitals and the drug companies would respond to this show? (They are kind of painted as some of the bad guys) 3) I found Aetna's response to the criticism of their 2001 decisions to purge 8 million customers very interesting. I had heard the interview on the Bill Moyer show where I was led to believe Aetna "dropped the sick people." It was not explained that Aetna basically dropped the markets where they were unable to negotiate lower prices because they had a low market share. Thanks for sharing this link!! More people should listen to this.
