like watching TV when you're making love

"A flickering glow welcomed me to my university’s chapel service. Votive candles? If only. No, these were glowing smartphones, as thick as fireflies on a summer’s evening. It was a scene of tremendous absurdity, like a man watching TV while making love to his wife: distracted people distracting themselves during a sacred act...the foretaste of some looming spiritual crisis."

The opening to a nice little piece on technology in FT and some of its costs...

I don't have a "smart"phone yet, and don't intend to do so anytime soon. The cost-- and the price-- seem far too high. If you have one, please consider how it is changing you-- in obviously and subtly damaging ways. And consider the relevant spiritual disciplines you can embrace to minimize the damages.
