"reach the lost" and "equip the believer"
Just heard a sermon where the pastor claimed that the primary purpose of the church is to "reach the lost", with nary a word about discipleship. Biblically (and in line with the ministry model of Jesus), it's far easier to make a case that the primary purpose of the church is to "equip and build up Christians for service, unity, maturity, etc. teaching them to obey all Christ commanded" (Mt 28:18-20, Eph 4:11-16).
At the least, those two goals should be 1A and 1B. For believers and churches: If you don't have "equip" and (robust) discipleship as a top part of your vision and your plan, then you ain't doing it right.
