Casino Colgate?

From David Mann with the (Jeff/NA) News-Tribune...

With the Colgate plant in Clarksville shutting down last week, talk has turned to alternative uses of the property. Although a range of commercial opportunities are available, Mann's focus on a casino in his article is among the more interesting prospects...

As moods have changed in Indianapolis, talk of a casino in Clark County has been revived, with some locals looking to the Colgate-Palmolive Co. property as a possible site.

During the November 2006 election, Clark County voters approved a ballot initiative that would allow riverboat gaming. However, Indiana only has 11 gaming licenses, all of which were in use in other counties.

Efforts to move one of the licenses to Clark County were thwarted during the last General Assembly session by Sen. Bob Meeks, R-LaGrange, who authored an amendment that prohibited casinos from moving.

Now, Meeks has filed a bill that will allow a casino to move from Gary to his own district in Steuben County, thus reigniting the casino chatter locally.

It always amazes me to see such obvious selfish political maneuvers. Sen. Meeks is strongly against it-- unless he can benefit from it. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what happens with that property and the potential expansion of gambling in Southern Indiana.
