Obama's bizarre, individualistic patriotism

Obama's speech the other day garnered a lot of attention.

This phrase received some comment, but only for its bizarre definition rather than its surprising philosophical basis:

He summed up his view of patriotism as "the liberty of each of us to pursue our own dreams."

It is exceedingly odd to define patriotism as individualistic without reference to a whole.

It is surprising to find a Democrat use an individualistic definition rather than one that appeals to community or allegiance to the State as a mechanism for accomplishing various goals.
