a little bit of freedom saved for now...

From Dick Kaukas with the C-J, a report that New Albany Mayor Doug England vetoed a comprehensive smoking ban for New Albany.

Good news: producers and consumers still have the freedom to choose (the former-- whether to offer; the latter-- whether to attend).

Bad news: England has promised to sign a "compromise" measure which would exempt bars, restaurants with bars (if they only serve and employ people over 21), and private "clubs".

I detest cigarette smoke, but I will defend your freedom to smoke in public (aside from government buildings or any government monopolies--where one is forced to go).

Saying he was acting "in the spirit of compromise," New Albany Mayor Doug England yesterday vetoed an ordinance that would have banned smoking in most enclosed public places, including bars and restaurants.

Instead of the comprehensive ban outlined in the measure that the City Council approved 5-4 last month, England recommended exceptions...

"I pledge to sign" an ordinance with those changes, England said at a news conference....
