what does Chambliss' victory mean?

Incumbent Republican Chambliss smashed Democratic challenger Martin 57-43 in the run-off, after only edging Martin by a few percentage points in the November general election (50-47).

What explains this?
a.) Intensified fears of a filibuster-proof majority for the Dems?
b.) Palin's campaigning for Chambliss.
c.) Chambliss ran a great campaign &/or Martin struggled.
d.) The smaller subset of voters who come out for run-off vs. presidential elections.
e.) The lack of Obama at the top of the ticket.

Correct answer?
Maybe A. Doubtful on B and C. Modest for D. And most for E.

If so, what does this mean (if anything) for the Dems, excluding the Obama phenomenon?

There could be a simpler explanation: Chambliss was the better qualified candidate.

Now, if that were typical voter sentiment, Obama would not be on his way to Washington, but you would.

BTW - I note your blog has a Google page rank of 5. Not bad!

Whether Chambliss is or not, I don't think that the perception of him as a much better qualified candidate would have changed that much in a month.

Obama and Palin were far less "qualified" than McCain and Biden, but I'd take the former in a heartbeat over the latter.
