servants and slaves

Dave made an interesting point in his sermon this weekend...

We talk about servants as if it's something for the wealthy.
We talk about slaves as if it's something from the past or in certain backwards countries.

But all of us have servants. We rent the labor services of people, getting them to do stuff for us, all the time. Think about servers at restaurants, stewards on flights, those who babysit your kids, and so on.

And all of us have slaves-- of the mechanical version. We purchase slaves to do a lot of our work for us. Of course, this is a far cry from the human version. (In the U.S., we have a range of public policies which promote various types and degrees of slavery, but that's a longer story.)

Interesting...
