eminent domain, Sen. Tim Shaughnessy, and Wayside Christian Mission

Another prospective kick in the pants for freedom, justice, and the poor-- from a Democrat...

From Sarah Kelley in LEO...

It seemed like a done deal, at least for about a day: The Hotel Louisville on West Broadway had fallen into foreclosure, and Wayside Christian Mission successfully bid on the property at auction, planning to turn the 287-room building into a shelter for homeless women and children.

Having learned from previous snafus, Wayside officials contacted nearby businesses to explain their plans before submitting a bid and encountered zero opposition. The support (or perhaps apathy) was a pleasant surprise given past community resistance — first when the nonprofit attempted to renovate its East Market Street facility, and then upon trying to open a shelter for families at the former Mercy Academy campus in the Original Highlands.

In the end, neither of those endeavors worked out for Wayside.

But just as it appeared Wayside’s luck was changing, it became clear the nonprofit would face yet another obstacle:

It turns out Jefferson Community and Technical College wants the land at Second and Broadway to expand its downtown campus....

State Sen. Tim Shaughnessy, D-Louisville, told The Courier-Journal he believes the state’s community college system should use eminent domain to take the desired property...

Here's what he said in that article:

Sen. Tim Shaughnessy, D-Louisville, said he plans to urge the community college system to take the property through eminent domain."That property needs to be part of the master plan for the downtown campus for the college," he said. "No disrespect toward the ministries -- they certainly have an important role to play in this community -- but the college has a larger role."

Classy...and a Democrat coming out and explicitly hurting the poor? Usually, their prolific damage to the poor is more subtle.

I had the chance (I will not call it an opportunity) to sit in a room with the Senator years ago as a college student.

After hearing him speak and seeing the attitude he emanated, I soon became an ultra conservative.

Which would make me a Libertarian these days, by definition.

His words don't surprise me and shouldn't surprise anyone.
