will Baron Hill support abortion funding and break his 95-10 pledge?

From Mike Fichter in a letter to the editor of the C-J...

I never heard back from Mike when I asked him about GOP votes for Planned Parenthood funding in federal budgets, even when they controlled Congress and the Presidency. But he's on-target here.

In the closing days of the 2006 election cycle, Indiana Congressman Baron Hill pledged to voters in Indiana's 9th Congressional District that he supported a plan floated by Democrats for Life called the 95-10 plan. Specifically, this plan's stated purpose is to “reduce the number of abortions by 95 percent in the next 10 years by promoting abstinence, personal responsibility, adoptions and support for women and families who are facing unplanned pregnancy.”

One thing is sure: You don't reduce abortions by providing more money to fund them. As the leading voice for Blue Dog Democrats in Congress, Hill is now in a prime position to follow through on his pledge by opposing any health care reform bill that does not specifically exclude abortion. As H.R. 3200 currently stands, it threatens to be the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade, by mandating coverage for all U.S. abortions at taxpayer expense.

Hill will face enormous pressure from President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to break his word to the voters, but in this defining moment he must stand against his party's leaders and vote no on mandated abortion coverage.

Will Hill take a stand? I sure hope so, but should I hold my breath?
