Presidential appointee moves quickly to regulate a nasty Presidential habit

From James Carroll in the C-J, news that the FDA is moving quickly to regulate tobacco.

Two funny/amazing things here:

-It's odd to see a bureaucracy move quickly. I don't know whether to be worried or amazed or both.

-It's ironic that Obama, a smoker, has set up a regulatory agency that is speedily looking to regulate his habit.

The Food and Drug Administration has taken significant steps toward setting up the nation's new anti-smoking agency, less than 90 days after the federal government was given the authority to regulate tobacco products....

Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., one of the chief sponsors of the legislation, said he was pleased with the FDA's first moves.

“In the short time since its creation, the FDA Center for Tobacco Products has moved rapidly to fulfill its crucial mission,” Waxman said in a statement. “I have great confidence that it will make major progress in combating tobacco use and improving the public health of all Americans.”...

Waxman likes it. That's generally a very bad sign...
