SIGS' boys team featured in the C-J

Unfortunately, Z wasn't there since we were out of town, visiting family for Christmas. But a great story on the boys' team by Jenna Esarey in the C-J...

“They're itty-bitty little string beans, but you wouldn't believe how strong they are,” said Kelsey Meadows, one of the team's coaches....

Begun four years ago as a simple class for boys, the group quickly evolved into a team and began competing three years ago. It took first place at this season's opening meet last month, the Champions Winter Challenge in Louisville on Dec. 6.

The boys will compete in six events during the current season, which ends in March....

The boys compete in different categories based on their skill level. There are six events: floor, parallel bars, high bar, vault, rings and pommel horse/mushroom.

The team exists largely because of head coach Regan Green, 18. As a gymnast at SIGS, she noticed that more than a few boys were hanging out in the lobby waiting for their older sisters to finish a class...Green asked permission to start a class for them, and at age 14 she started teaching boys. Meadows, now 21, offered to assist her, and the class grew from there...

Bob Bronger, a retired high school football coach and father of team member Casey Bronger, is impressed with what Green has accomplished....“She's learning along with the guys,” said Bronger, who recently obtained his coaching license through USA Gymnastics....

Bob is a huge help in the practices...Thanks Bob!
