10 things to look for in a church's doctrine

From Kyle this weekend, a sermon on doctrinal purity
with I Corinthians 15:1-11 as the springboard...

In the intro, Kyle covered a set of "false teacher" types: the legislator/legalist, motivational speaker, superstar, and salesman. Then, he drew a parallel between a Rolex vs. Faux-lex-- and the need to be able to tell the difference. From there, he covered 10 things to look for in terms of doctrine at a church (particularly, with respect to preaching):

1.) Is fellowship based on common commitment to Christ? (15:1a)

2.) Is there a continual emphasis on essentials? (15:1ff)

3.) Does the message challenge me personally? (15:1b)

4.) Is the message presented as Good News and good news? (15:2a)

5.) Is the call to believe, not just to follow? (15:2b)

6.) Is the message delivered by an authentic messenger-- walk and talk? (15:3a)

7.) Is the primary focus consistently on Jesus Christ? (15:3b)

8.) Is the message based on the Bible? (15:3b, 4b)

9.) Is the message taught with brokenness/humility? (15:9)

10.) Does it all come down to God's grace? Or as I would phrase it instead: Does it properly combine God's grace and our effort-- God's provision and our participation? (15:10)
