reason and faith: a Chesterton quote-of-the-day

From an essay by Ralph Wood I'm reading about G.K. Chesterton's outstanding book Orthodoxy in First Things, I'm reminded of this provocative quote:

"Reason itself is a matter of faith. It is an act of faith to assert that our thoughts have any relation to reality at all."

A lot of people are so allergic to faith, claiming that they rely solely on reason. That claim-- taken literally-- is nonsense. Perhaps they mean that they choose degrees of reason when available. Fine. But employing reason requires faith. Drawing inferences almost always requires from available evidences to one's conclusions.

One cannot
reasonably ignore the role of faith.
