Calipari and Big Blue in World

Mark Bergin raises an interesting ethical question about college athletics and recruiting in World...

The same day that news of [John] Calipari's move [from Memphis to UK] broke, blue-chip recruits Xavier Henry and DeMarcus Cousins announced they would re-open the recruiting process, laying aside previous commitments to Memphis....

The situation raises questions about the nature of recruiting and hiring. Did Calipari's stock climb at Kentucky due to the talent he might bring with him? And if so, is Memphis entitled to some reimbursement, given that Calipari's recruiting efforts while on the Memphis payroll may now effectively pay dividends for Kentucky?

The short answer is no, which makes the second question N/A. Kentucky didn't want Calipari for the recruits that he could bring from Memphis. They wanted Calipari so that he could get these type of recruits at Kentucky every year. Hiring him primarily for Memphis' recruits this year would have been too short-sighted. I think it's possible the NCAA may try and regulate these situations in some way, though.....Janet's husband
