sports this weekend

I'm somewhere between a casual and serious sports fan/observer. I used to be a huge baseball fan. (I've been to about 150 games and 20+ different ballparks.) But with free agency, scandals, and the Orioles becoming the anti-Orioles, it's just not as much fun anymore. Plus, you have to devote a lot of time to a daily sport. I think that's one of the reasons football is so popular. With the work, family, and friends of the typical mid-life, it's a lot easier to follow a weekly event.

Still, I keep up with the standings and watch events here and there. A few things from this weekend:
-It was interesting to see the mostly positive reaction of the San Diego fans to Barry's 755th. I wonder how much of it was condoning the presumed steroid use (or ambivalence)-- rather than simply being awed by participating in a historical moment. (Ironically, Clay Hensley, who gave up the bomb, was actually busted for using a "performance-enhancing substance", resulting in a 15-day suspension in 2005.)
-Likewise, it was good to see Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th home run. Assuming he stays healthy and productive, the current discussions of Bonds will be rendered, mostly, moot in a few years.
-It was hilarious to see Tiger blow up Rory Sabatini yesterday, turning a one-shot deficit into an eight-shot victory. In the first 10 holes, Tiger gained 8 shots on Rory, who earlier in the year, had said that Tiger was more beatable than he had been in years. Brutal!
-Finally, I loved the story of Dara Torres who set a U.S. record in the 50-meter freestyle on Saturday-- at age 40! She first qualified for the Olympics in 1984 and has recently returned to competitive swimming after the birth of her first child. Awesome!
